How can we help?

Most problems with an OBD2 scanner come down to the adapter, the ignition position, or what the car itself is willing to report. Start here — and if none of it fits, write to us and a human will answer.

We read every message at codeguruservice@gmail.com and normally reply within two working days. Telling us your phone model, your car's make, model and year, and the adapter you use gets you a useful answer the first time.

Connection problems

My adapter does not show up at all

Work through these in order — one of them is almost always the answer:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON. Not accessory, not off. Many adapters have no power and the car's modules stay asleep with the key out. You do not need the engine running.
  2. Check the adapter's light. No light at all means no power at the socket — check the fuse for the cigarette lighter or the OBD port, as they often share one.
  3. Pick the right kind. Bluetooth Classic adapters must be paired in Android settings first (PIN 1234 or 0000), then selected in the app. BLE adapters must not be paired in settings — choose them inside the app. WiFi adapters need you to join their hotspot in Android settings before opening the app.
  4. Grant the permissions. Android needs Nearby devices for Bluetooth, and Location switched on for BLE scanning on some versions. The app asks once; if you declined, enable it in Android Settings → Apps → CodeGuru → Permissions.
  5. Power cycle. Unplug the adapter, wait ten seconds, plug it back in.

The full walk-through, per adapter type, is in the ELM327 setup guide.

It connects, then drops out after a few seconds

This is nearly always the adapter, not the phone. Very cheap ELM327 clones overheat or reset under a steady stream of requests. Try these:

  • Make sure no other app (another scanner, a dashboard app) is holding the same adapter. Only one can own it at a time.
  • Turn Android battery optimisation off for CodeGuru, so the system does not suspend the connection in the background.
  • If the adapter is plugged in through an extension lead, remove the lead and plug it straight into the port.
  • If it only drops while the engine is cranking, that is normal — voltage sags below what the adapter needs.
Bluetooth pairing asks for a PIN

Almost every ELM327 adapter uses 1234. A handful use 0000 or 6789. The PIN is usually printed on the adapter or in its leaflet.

Reading the car

No fault codes found, but the warning light is on

A plain OBD2 read only reaches the engine control unit — that is all the standard guarantees. If the light belongs to ABS, airbag, traction control or the gearbox, those codes live in other modules, and you need a full system scan to see them.

The other common cause: the codes were cleared recently. Clearing wipes the stored codes, and the light only comes back once the car re-detects the fault over a few drive cycles.

My car shows fewer sensors than I expected

The app can only show what your vehicle publishes. Every car declares its own list of supported PIDs, and an older or simpler vehicle genuinely has fewer of them. No scanner — app or handheld — can show data a car does not provide. The All sensors screen lists exactly what yours answered for.

A code shows as "pending" — do I need to worry?

Not yet. A pending code means the module saw the fault once and is waiting to see it again before turning the light on. If the condition does not repeat, the car clears it by itself. It is worth noting, not worth panicking over.

Can I damage my car with this app?

The app reads data and, when you ask it to, sends the standard clear-codes request. It does not reprogram, recode or write to control modules. The one thing to be careful with is clearing: it erases freeze frame data and resets emission readiness monitors, so do not clear codes just before an emissions test, and do not clear them before a mechanic has seen them.

Subscription & billing

How do I cancel?

The subscription is billed by Google Play, not by us, so it is cancelled there: open the Google Play app → tap your profile picture → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions → CodeGuru → Cancel subscription.

You keep premium access until the end of the period you have already paid for. You can also go straight there from play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.

I paid, but premium is still locked

Open the app with an internet connection and use Restore purchases in Settings. Check that the phone is signed in to the same Google account that made the purchase. If it still does not unlock, email us with your Google Play order number (it starts with GPA.) and we will sort it out.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for Google Play purchases are handled by Google under their refund policy, and requests inside the first 48 hours can usually be made from your Play order history. If you believe something went wrong on our side, email us and we will help you with the request.

Privacy & data

What data does the app collect?

There is no account, and the app does not ask for your name, email or phone number. What your car reports stays on your phone. The full list of what does leave the device, and who receives it, is in the privacy policy.

How do I delete my data?

Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored — the garage, trips, saved scans and settings all live on the device. There is no server-side account to delete.

Still stuck? Send us the phone model, the car's make, model and year, and your adapter type.
